Somerby of Mobile Resident Says Giving Back Is In Her Nature

6/2/2009

Today's Older Adults Prove They Are Vital Part of Any Community

Mobile, AL: When it comes to staying active, 87-year old Corky Catlin is a prime example. Although she is retired, this Somerby of Mobile resident admits she never sits still. Catlin is instrumental in helping the community recycle newspapers. She will literally collect papers from her neighbors and keep them stored until taking them three times a week to her church where recycling papers is used as a fundraiser.

May is Older Americans Month, a time designated by the President to pay tribute to the growing population of seniors 65 and better and their valuable contributions to our culture. According the U.S. Census Bureau, Catlin is among the nearly 625,000 Alabamans in that age category, many of whom are still very active and vital in their communities.

“My joy is in serving others,” said Catlin. “I’m somewhere all the time. I would rather be active and keep going.”

That drive and commitment to contribute is noticed by others at Somerby of Mobile. Catlin also enjoys driving her friends on shopping outings. When not shopping, she might be found participating in water aerobics at the community three times a week or even helping to change out the flower centerpieces weekly in the Somerby dining room.

“Corky is just one of the many residents here at Somerby that steps in to help in a variety of ways,” said Jeff Minton, Somerby of Mobile director of marketing. “We witness first-hand how older adults, not only here, but throughout the city, volunteer their time and talents. It’s nice to have at least one month set aside to recognize all these active adults do for us.”

And the number of individuals in that age bracket continues to grow. The U.S. Census Bureau reports the 65+ population in the United States accounts for nearly 38-million people and will increase to more than 88 million in the next 40 years. People are living longer and healthier lives with a life expectancy of 78.

“I’ve got to be active and on the move,” added Catlin. “I know I’m healthier as a result and staying busy is something I enjoy.”
